Harmony Gold has said it does not intend selling its Joel mine in Johannesburg after rumours Wits Gold intended on buying the operations.
SA Harmony Gold Mining, the world’s fifth-biggest gold producer, said production fell in its third quarter, without giving a reason.
Harmony Gold Mining will receive a foreign-capital injection equivalent to R1,9-billion once all the conditions precedent in the $420-million transaction with the Pamodzi Resources Fund have been fulfilled, Harmony CEO Graham Briggs said on Thursday. A new uranium player, Rand Uranium, will be established.

The world’s fifth largest gold miner, Harmony Gold, said on Friday that its production for the March 2008 quarter would decrease. ”In the light of Eskom’s electricity-supply disruptions and with mines operating only at 90% of Harmony’s previous power supply, the company’s production for the March 2008 quarter will decrease,” it said in a statement.

Mines had their power levels increased from 80% to 90% on Friday but they still needed a guarantee of a reliable power supply, the Gold Fields mining company said on Friday. On Thursday, Eskom backtracked on an undertaking when it promised to provide 90% of its normal power supplies to mining companies.

South African gold producers and the world’s biggest platinum miner suspended production at all their mines in the country on Friday due to a power crisis, helping send precious metal prices to new highs. Shares in most of the affected firms dived as the government said the power cuts were ”a national emergency”.
Graham Briggs has been appointed CEO of Harmony Gold Mining with effect from January 1 2008, the company said on Wednesday. Harmony — the world’s fifth biggest gold producer — appointed a selection panel at the end of October 2007, made up of four non-executive board members, to oversee the selection process for the position of CEO.
South African stocks were sharply higher at noon on the first trading day of 2008, but volumes remained low as most traders are still on their festive-season break. By noon on the JSE, the all-share index was 1,05% higher. Resources added 1,24%, the platinum-mining index was up 1,88% but the gold-mining index was flat.

One miner has died and another was injured following an underground accident at Harmony Gold’s Elandsrand mine on Friday, the company said. ”He succumbed to his injuries after he was trapped underground for four hours. His body was discovered in the afternoon,” said chief operating officer Alwyn Pretorius.
About 1Â 250 miners remained trapped more than 2,2km underground in Harmony Gold’s Elandsrand mine near Carletonville on Thursday after an all-night rescue mission. The mine’s general manager, Stan Bierschenk, said the morale of workers still stuck below ground was ”fairly brittle”.
