The Jeppestown massacre trial was postponed in the Johannesburg High Court on Friday to allow a defence attorney to recover. The court had to adjourn on Thursday morning after defence counsel Sibusiso Mbatha complained of pain. He had fallen down the stairs at his house on Wednesday night.

The ”Jeppestown massacre” trial was on Monday postponed to Tuesday in the Johannesburg High Court so that a decision on the recusal of the judge could be made. Eleven out of the 13 accused on Friday filed an application for the recusal of Judge Ratha Motkgoatleng on the basis of reasonable apprehension of bias.

Counsel for the defence in the Jeppestown murder and robbery trial on Thursday objected to what it termed a ”hybrid identification procedure” that it believed could prejudice the 13 accused. ”This is a hybrid procedure that buttresses the memory of the witness,” said Sidwell Ford in the Johannesburg High Court on Thursday.

After all 13 people implicated in the Jeppestown massacre had pleaded not guilty to every charge put to them on Wednesday, the trial settled into the task of admitting vast amounts of evidence into the court records. Earlier, the woman and 12 men elected to remain silent on the 23 charges they face collectively.
