Jeppestown trial postponed

The ”Jeppestown massacre” trial was on Monday postponed to Tuesday in the Johannesburg High Court so that a decision on the recusal of the judge could be made.

Eleven out of the 13 accused on Friday filed an application for the recusal of Judge Ratha Motkgoatleng on the basis of reasonable apprehension of bias.

State prosecutor Joanie Spies told the court on Monday that the allegations of bias were factually incorrect because they were based on one remark that was taken out of context.

Motkgoatleng said he would deliver his judgement on Tuesday morning on the matter.

The 13 are on trial for the deaths of 12 people, including four police officers, in a shoot-out in Jeppestown after a supermarket robbery on the West Rand in June 2006. — Sapa
