Bloomsbury confident of life after Potter

Bloomsbury assured the market last week that the magic has not deserted it in the post-Harry Potter era and it is banking on a strong line-up of books in the year ahead. Reporting 2007 results, the publisher said it not only benefited from big sales for the final boy-wizard instalment, but also from the success of Khaled Hosseini’s <i>The Kite Runner</i> and <i>A Thousand Splendid Suns</i> and other books.

China to the rescue

It was a potent symbol of a new world order on August 21 when China raised interest rates for the fourth time this year in a desperate attempt to cool an overheated local economy. The move comes at a time when central bankers in the West are wondering whether they should be cutting the cost of borrowing to stave off a potential economic downturn caused by the credit crisis.

BBC on a selling spree to up profits

BBC Worldwide’s annual sales show for buyers from around the world reflects the broadcaster’s need to make a profit from exporting its shows to close the gap in funding after the recent licence-fee settlement in Britain. For five days, 560 self-confessed telly addicts from Argentina to India fill 500 TV booths in Brighton’s conference centre for marathon viewing sessions of shows such as <i>Life on Mars</i>, <i>Planet Earth</i> and <i>Robin Hood</i>.
