Construction on Durban’s 2010 Soccer World Cup stadium is set to come to a halt next Wednesday when workers down tools, the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) said on Thursday. Mzi Poswa, NUM’s regional organiser and chief negotiator said the strike would start on November 5.

KwaZulu-Natal opposition parties on Wednesday accused the ruling African National Congress of ignoring the wishes of the residents of Matatiele and forging ahead with the district’s incorporation into the Eastern Cape. A KwaZulu-Natal woman accused of stealing a placenta pleaded guilty to the crime at the Durban Regional Court on Monday. Hloniphile Sokhela was charged with theft and contravening the Human Tissue Act. The mother of two stole a placenta from a storage room at Parklands Hospital on October 6.

The fifth man arrested for the murder of historian David Rattray was sentenced to 25 years’ imprisonment in the Pietermaritzburg High Court on Friday morning. Zwelihle Mtshali (21) pleaded guilty to one count of murder and one count of attempted robbery with aggravating circumstances.

In a bizarre case of overloading, two policemen in northern KwaZulu-Natal impounded a blue Fiat Uno on Thursday that was being used to transport two cows and two goats. Police spokesperson Captain Jabulani Mdletshe said two off-duty policemen were informed by residents of the Phelindaba area near Emanguzi that they had seen a man loading a cow into the small vehicle.
