Castro says he is not well enough to speak in public

Hours after Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said ailing Cuban leader Fidel Castro was in ”impeccable” health, Castro told local media he was not fit for public speaking. Lula raised eyebrows and quick questions about Castro’s political future, saying after a long discussion on Tuesday: ”I think Fidel is ready to take on his political role in Cuba.”

Brazil officially named 2014 World Cup hosts

Brazil, the only bidding country, were named as the host nation of the 2014 Soccer World Cup finals by Fifa, world soccer’s governing body, on Tuesday. Brazil, who have won the World Cup a record five times and are the only country to have played in all 18 World Cup finals tournaments, last staged the event in 1950.

Agreement on Doha ‘extremely close’

World trade talks appeared to be making progress on Wednesday as the leaders of Brazil, India and South Africa said they were committed to reaching a deal. The leaders said differences with rich countries were still blocking agreement in the Doha round, launched nearly six years ago to help developing countries grow out of poverty and boost the world economy by opening up global trade.

Leaders of South Africa, Brazil and India meet this week to bolster an alliance that is challenging the United States and Europe for access to resources in the developing world and influence on the global stage. Protests in Burma dominate UN agenda

President George Bush announced new United States sanctions against Burma on Tuesday as world leaders at the United Nations General Assembly focused on rising protests against military rule in the South-East Asian state. Bush urged all nations to ”help the Burmese people reclaim their freedom”.
