Court dismisses arms-deal application

A Cape High Court judge on Monday dismissed an application to force Finance Minister Trevor Manuel to hand over arms-deal documents, activist Terry Crawford-Browne said. He said Judge Daniel Dlodlo ruled in essence ”that I had waited too long in asserting my rights to discovery of the documents”.

Ramos joins SABMiller board

SABMiller announced on Wednesday that Transnet head Maria Ramos has joined their board as an independent non-executive director. "During her career, Ms Ramos has won a multitude of accolades, including being named as South Africa’s Businesswoman of the Year in 2001, and <i>Sunday Times</i> Business Leader of the Year 2005," said SABMiller.

Transnet hit by powers cuts

Power cuts are hitting Transnet’s service, its chief executive, Maria Ramos, announced in Johannesburg on Wednesday. The power cuts are a problem, particularly as far as the company’s expansion projects are concerned, she said. ”We were affected and we are from time to time affected by the power issues — like everybody else.”

Ramos ranked 14th most powerful businesswoman

Transnet group chief executive Maria Ramos has moved up two places to become the world’s 14th most powerful woman in business this year, according to Fortune magazine’s latest rankings. Ramos was 16th on the American leading business magazine’s list last year. This year is the fourth time she has appeared on the annual list.

Ramos resolves to win freight back from the roads

Having for the first time in a decade halted the draining away of freight transportation from the railways to the roads, Maria Ramos, the chief executive of Transnet, is aiming to win back a large slice of the business. "Not all cargo on the roads is suitable for rail," Ramos explained in Cape Town on Wednesday, "but we are targeting the container traffic aggressively."
