The Highveld Lions beat the Warriors by nine wickets with more than 10 overs to spare in their Domestic Championship match at Sedgars Park in Potchefstroom on Sunday. The Lions innings was interrupted by a heavy downpour just five runs short of victory, but they returned an hour later for Stephen Cook to score the winning runs.

A maiden century by Mark Boucher helped South Africa show their dominance over Zimbabwe with a stunning 171-run victory in the third and final MTN one-day international (ODI) at Sedgars Park, Potchefstroom, on Wednesday. Jacques Kallis won the toss and chose to bat — and South Africa put on an enormous 418-5 in their 50 overs.
Bloemfontein Celtic secured a vital Premier Soccer League (PSL) win on Sunday afternoon, defeating high-flying Ajax Cape Town 2-0 in a rescheduled match in Potchefstroom. The match was due be played last year, but owing to the pitch not meeting Fifa requirements, the game was called off by the referee.

A North West man had both his hands amputated after a hand grenade he was playing with exploded on Wednesday afternoon, police said on Thursday. ”Apparently he picked this device up in the veld and had been playing around with it for the past two weeks,” a police spokesperson said.
The Eagles virtually made sure of a Supersport Series semifinal place as they nearly beat the Lions in three days at Sedgars Park on Saturday. With a day to go, the Lions — after being forced to follow-on — trail by six runs with three second innings wickets in hand. Starting day three at 104 for three, the Lions squandered the good start.

The Zimbabwe touring team beat a combined Gauteng/North West team by seven wickets in the opening game of their South African tour, thanks to a splendid unbeaten century by Hamilton Masakadza. Masakadza weighed in with 103 not-out off 120 balls and struck 11 boundaries and one six.

Oscar Pistorius, the sensational schoolboy sprinter, broke his world 200m record for double below-the-knee amputees in his first major race against able-bodied athletes at the opening Absa Series meeting in Potchefstroom on Friday night. The matriculant from Pretoria Boys’ High surged to 21,83 seconds in ideal conditions.

The names of South Africa’s most celebrated freedom fighters might soon appear on every street corner and building in Potchefstroom, the city council said on Wednesday. Spokesperson Japie Fransman said the next time someone walks down Van der Hoff Street, they might just be walking down a street named after President Thabo Mbeki, ”the country’s favourite man”.
Right-wing leader Eugene Terre’Blanche took to the streets of Potchefstroom on a black horse on Friday to wild cheers from a mainly black audience who shouted ”Welcome out” and tried to shake his hand.

Former Afrikaner Weerstandsbeweging leader Eugene Terre’blanche was convicted on Wednesday of five counts of terrorism by the Potchefstroom Regional Court, a National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson said. Makhosini Nkosi said Terre’blanche was convicted under the Internal Security Act.
