Senior editors and journalist are to meet police National Commissioner Jackie Selebi in Pretoria on Friday to discuss the centralisation of police communication departments. Police National Commissioner Jackie Selebi’s decision that the media will only be allowed to direct questions to provincial officials is an attempt to gag the media, the Freedom Front Plus (FF+) said on Thursday. ”It does not only infringe on media freedom but also on the constitutional right to freedom of speech,” said Pieter Groenewald, the party’s spokesperson on safety and security.

Gauteng police on Wednesday told media organisations not to make direct contact with police stations following the newly introduced police-centralisation process. ”There will be no comments to media enquiries from any member of the service in the province … Do not attempt to make direct contact at police stations,” Director Govindsamy Mariemuthoo said on Wednesday.

South Africa defended on Wednesday its decision to vote against a United States-led United Nations Security Council resolution urging democratic reform in Burma, saying the measure went beyond the council’s mandate. South Africa has again stressed that its defence force is over-stretched and is still considering troop contributions to an African Union peacekeeping force in Somalia. Four South Africans abducted in Iraq a month ago are still alive, Foreign Affairs Deputy Minister Aziz Pahad said on Wednesday. Pahad said the men’s captors had told negotiators they were safe and that negotiations to free them continue. ”Of course this is their word,” Pahad said, adding that there was no independent confirmation of the men’s health.

The Rail Safety Regulator will investigate an apparent suicide on Monday in which a couple and a baby died in Ga-Rankuwa. A train crashed into their bakkie on a level-crossing at midday. ”We remain concerned at the growing number of accidents at level crossings and will continue to work closely with operators to find lasting solutions,” the regulator said in statement on Tuesday.

At least two of the Waterkloof Four should not be sentenced to long prison terms for killing a man and assaulting another, the Pretoria Regional Court heard on Monday. Christoff Becker’s and Frikkie du Preez’s court-appointed probation officials recommended prison sentences, but both said they should not be for an extended period.

A former Waterkloof schoolboy convicted of killing a homeless man would be ”utterly destroyed” should he be sent to prison, his advocate said in the Pretoria Regional Court on Monday. Two men have been arrested after they blew up an ATM in Mamelodi East outside Pretoria, Gauteng police said on Friday. Director Govindsamy Mariemuthoo said the men blew up a Standard Bank ATM at a Shell garage and an AK-47 rifle, a 9mm pistol and a BMW were seized by the police.

The country’s two biggest agricultural unions have condemned Minister of Land Affairs and Agriculture Lulu Xingwana over her criticism of farmers’ treatment of their workers. While the Transvaal Agricultural Union wants her sacked, AgriSA has lodged a complaint with the South African Human Rights Commission and has written to President Thabo Mbeki and Xingwana.
Vehicle sales in 2007 are likely to move sideways or register modest growth, Johan van Zyl, president of the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa, said on Tuesday. He said that while 2006 had been an outstanding record year in terms of new-vehicle sales, this year will be ”more challenging”.
Police are investigating a case of arson after a fire raged through a four-storey block of flats in central Pretoria on Tuesday. Spokesperson Inspector Paul Ramaloko said the cause of the fire at Kinnoulle Mansions on Prinsloo Street was unknown and a case of arson would be investigated.
Pretoria High Court Judge Nkola Motata has taken leave of absence from duty, Judge President Bernard Ngoepe said in a statement on Tuesday. Ngoepe met with Motata on Tuesday following Motata’s arrest in Hurlingham, Johannesburg, on Friday, allegedly for drunk driving. ”The judge has, in the interests of justice, asked for a leave of absence from duty,” Ngoepe said.
