Three years ago Gauteng administrators asked a group of really smart people to look into the economic potential of Soweto.

The elephant is seen to represent Richard Maponya as being part of the "big five" of business and retail in Soweto, but the actual symbolism of the stature has nothing to do with the man’s businesses.
