It may be necessary to consider a moratorium on the sale of public and state land to prioritise land for sustainable human settlements, Minister of Housing Lindiwe Sisulu said at the National Municipal Housing Indaba on Monday. Eastern Cape fires ‘out of control’

A fire in the Humansdorp area of the Eastern Cape and three fires in the Tsitsikamma area were out of control on Monday night, Working on Fire (WOF) said. ”They are burning commercial timber and indigenous veld,” WOF spokesperson Val Charlton said at 7.30pm. Gale-force winds expected on Tuesday would fan the flames.

Batting supremo Herschelle Gibbs and fellow all-rounder Nicky Boje are out of South Africa’s tour to India, again over fears of arrest for match-fixing that have haunted them for the past five years. Indian police are probing Gibbs and Boje’s alleged involvement in a match-fixing scandal dating back to 2000.

Tshwane council abandons ‘racist’ plans

The Tshwane metro council has abandoned plans to make the race of a tenderer count for half the points awarded in considering tenders for the sale of municipal properties, the Freedom Front Plus said on Monday. A policy document approved in June had recommended the adjustment of the system by which points are awarded.

Freight-train driver killed in derailment

A train driver who was trapped in a train engine for several hours after a derailment on Monday morning between Groot Marico and Swartruggens in the North West has died. Police spokesperson Inspector Erica Roos said the man was freed from the engine at about 10am. He was airlifted to a hospital, but died on the way.

Govt won’t block flow of Chinese clothing into SA

The government will not invoke World Trade Organisation rules to block the flow of cheap Chinese clothing into South Africa, Trade and Industry Minister Mandisi Mpahlwa said on Sunday. However, tariffs on raw materials such as yarn used by the local textile and clothing manufacturers may be reviewed in order to reduce input costs for the embattled sector.

New law will allow phones to be tapped

A new law will allow telephones to be tapped and e-mails to be intercepted in the fight against crime, the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development said on Sunday. A spokesperson said while the Interception of Communications and Provision of Communication-Related Information Act allows for the lawful interception of communications, this can only be done after authorisation by a judge.
