Listed food retailer Pick ‘n Pay has reported a 16,7% rise in its headline earnings per share for the six months to the end of August 2005 to 55,31 cents from 47,41 cents a year earlier. The company declared an interim dividend up 17,7% to 23,3 cents per share, compared with the 19,8 cents declared at the interim stage in 2005.

One of 11 accused in a case possibly linked to the kidnapping of a young boy in Ennerdale, Johannesburg, was allegedly subjected to ”shock treatment” in prison near Cape Town at the weekend. Defence counsel Leigh Thompson, for accused Vernon Noel Victor, told the Cape High Court Victor needed urgent medical attention.

There were conflicting reports of the success of a Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) call for a worker stayaway in Mpumalanga, the Free State and Northern Cape on Monday. Cosatu said the protest was a ”magnificent” success, while the South African Chamber of Business said its impact on businesses was hardly felt.

A rise in interest costs could cause increasing household debt to threaten the stability of South Africa’s financial system, the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) said on Monday. Three men appeared in the Vereeniging Magistrate’s Court on Monday charged with the kidnapping of 10-year-old Liam Aspeling last week, Gauteng police said. The boy was snatched from the front of his mother’s home in Ennerdale on Tuesday. He was reunited with his family on Wednesday.

More than 50% of urban South Africans have never gone a day without having anything to eat, research released on Sunday has found. Markinor, an associate of Gallop International, which carried out the study, said 73% of urban South Africans who participated in the survey had rarely or never experienced hunger.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma will host Northern Ireland’s Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams for discussions in Pretoria on Tuesday, her department said on Monday. Four new marine protected areas (MPAs) are to be proclaimed along the Cape coastline, Minister of Environmental Affairs and Tourism Marthinus van Schalkwyk announced on Friday.
