Murder accused Fred van der Vyver told the Cape High Court on Monday that he never used the ornamental hammer that the state says could have been a murder weapon. Members of the Evaton community attacked police after a three-year-old boy was killed by a drunk driver, Gauteng police said on Monday. The mob wanted police to hand the driver over to them, spokesperson Captain William Velaphi Mcera said. The incident took place on Bengu Road in Evaton on Sunday afternoon.

The conduct of certain people attending the funeral of former South African ambassador to Indonesia Norman Mashabane was ”despicable”, said the African National Congress (ANC) on Monday. The funeral took place in Phalaborwa on Saturday. ”We deplore the behaviour of these unruly elements. There is no room for such people in the ANC,” the party said.

A woman lost her legs during Rugby World Cup celebrations in Pretoria, police said on Monday. Spokesperson Inspector Paul Ramaloko said the woman, in her 20s, was injured when a car ran over her in Sunnyside on Saturday night after the Springboks won the World Cup tournament.

Five men were arrested on Sunday in connection with the murder of reggae star Lucky Dube, East Rand police said. Police arrested the five, aged between 31 and 35, in Spruitview on the East Rand on Sunday morning. Police spokesperson Superintendent Eugene Opperman said police seized two stolen handguns and a VW Polo.
