Three men convicted of raping three Durban women at a beach house on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast were on Thursday sentenced to five life sentences each in the Scottburgh High Court. Sithembiso Shelembe (23), Mthokozisi Mbambo (30) and Wonder Mchunu (27) will only be considered for parole after 25 years.

Growth in employment in South Africa accelerated noticeably over the past eight quarters after a prolonged period of marginal employment gains, the South African Reserve Bank said. The central bank said that improved employment prospects since early 2005 have been evident in both the public and private sector.

South Africa’s current-account deficit decreased to 6,5% of the gross domestic product in the second quarter of the year, down from 6,9% in the first, the South African Reserve Bank said on Thursday. This was mainly due to the raised demand for South African exports in the second quarter.

A team of 30 rescue-workers stretchered an injured base-jumper off Table Mountain at 10pm on Wednesday after an operation lasting eight-and-a-half hours, said Wilderness Search and Rescue. The 19-year-old hurt his back and ribs and sustained other minor injuries when he plummeted 30m down Platteklip Gorge at 2pm.

Eyewitnesses have claimed that the engine of a two-seater Tiger Moth failed before it crashed into a truck, bus and car on a road in Ennerdale on Wednesday. A passenger in the plane died in the crash, which also killed the driver of the Iveco bus and injured 23 of the 40 security guards on board.

A passenger in a two-seater Tiger Moth died and its pilot was critically injured when the plane crashed into a truck, a taxi and a car on the old Vereeniging Road, south of Johannesburg, on Wednesday, said emergency workers. The taxi driver also died and 22 people were injured in the crash in Ennerdale at 4.45pm, said a Johannesburg emergency services spokesperson.

Statistics South Africa has proposed changes to the basket it uses to measure consumer inflation to reflect new technology and social trends, it said on Wednesday. A meeting between the South African Transport and Allied Workers’ Union (Satawu) and South African (SAA) Airways over retrenchments has failed to reach a resolution, the union said on Wednesday. National aviation coordinator Kenneth Monanna said the two parties met on Tuesday under the supervision of the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration.
