The first cellphones fitted with Google’s Android software platform made their debut at an industry trade show on Monday, a milestone for the internet giant as it looks to dominate the wireless world. A handful of chip makers showed off prototype handsets at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

Google on Monday spelled out long-rumoured plans to enter the cellphone market in 2008 by building software that could help the industry make the internet run more easily on phones. The web search company is looking to expand the range of internet services it now offers through computer browsers to the far larger cellphone market.

The world’s largest cellphone maker, Nokia, said on Thursday it will join rivals — including Samsung and Sony Ericsson — to produce a fast flash memory card with high capacity to ease and speed up downloads for handset users. The technology is expected to be ready in 2009.
