‘He truly was a giant’

Chris McCarron remembered world-famous jockey Bill Shoemaker as larger than life, both in and out of the saddle. ”He was 4’11’ [1,5m], but when he walked into a room, he was a giant,” McCarron said on Tuesday at a memorial service for Shoemaker, who died on October 12.

Zondo to coach Sundowns

Former Lamontville Golden Arrows manager Khabo Zondo has been appointed as Sundowns’ joint coach to assist Oscar Fullone, who has enjoyed a bad start to his first season at the Kloorkop-based side. Zondo, who coached Thembisa Classic, will assist Fullone in an attempt to bring in some results and fresh ideas.

‘Technikon’ thrown into the rubbish bin

The name Unisa is to remain, a university is to be named after former president Nelson Mandela, and the term technikon is to disappear, Minister of Education Kader Asmal said on Tuesday. He was announcing the new names of higher education institutions that are to merge in terms of a plan approved by the Cabinet last year.

‘Discriminatory’ Bill approved

The way has been paved for next year’s general election to legally proceed following the adoption in the National Council of Provinces of the Electoral Laws Amendment Bill. The legislation was slated by opposition parties because of its Clause 9, which effectively prevents citizens abroad from voting in the election.
