A pamphlet stuck on a wall in Fordsburg advertising the healer ”Dr Ismael … from the Spiritual Mountain Kumi” offers solutions to a range of problems, from removing bad luck and making one likeable at work to providing muti if one is ”weak in sex” and helping ”women who can’t produce”. The Traditional Health Practitioners Act (THPA) promotes non-scientific religious practice in the form of public healthcare, says the NGO Doctors for Life International. Spokesperson Bola Omoniyi told the <i>Mail & Guardian Online</i> this week that the NGO is vehemently opposed to the Act.

Rwanda is seeking the extradition from Britain of four alleged masterminds of the 1994 genocide in which more than half a million people were killed, an official said on Tuesday. Tharcisse Karugarama, Rwanda’s Justice Minister, said his country has formally requested that the British government hand over the suspects.

Egyptian police have arrested a blogger who posted comments critical of the country’s Islamic authorities, a security official said on Tuesday, a day after a leading media watchdog ranked Egypt as one of the world’s top ”enemies of the internet”. Abdel Karim Nabil Suleiman (22) was detained on Monday in Alexandria.

New Zealand coach Graham Henry on Tuesday made 10 changes to the team that beat England when he named his side to take on France in the first of two Tests in Lyon on Saturday. SA Rugby on Tuesday announced the appointment of dynamic Free State Cheetahs flank Kabamba Floors as Springbok Sevens captain for the first two tournaments in the International Rugby Board Sevens Series. Floors will lead South Africa in the opening tournament on December 1 and 2 in Dubai and a week later on home soil in George.

Earthquake-prone Istanbul launched a major disaster simulation on Tuesday, after two small tremors reignited criticism that not enough has been done to protect the city of 12-million. Almost 18 000 people were killed in 1999 when a strong earthquake hit north-western Turkey, including Istanbul.

A Malawi opposition politician and popular musician convicted of faking credentials so he could run for Parliament won his appeal on Tuesday, and a high court judge added he was shocked that the singer had received such a harsh sentence. Lucius Banda had been sentenced to 21 months in prison with hard labour.
