Searchers dug through tonnes of rubble on Saturday in search of as many as eight people believed buried by a construction accident at a commuter rail tunnel in South America’s biggest city, São Paulo. Officials said a passenger bus was buried at the bottom of a 40m-deep pit dug for an underground railway station.

Rescuers have found 24 bodies and 10 people are still missing after floods and landslides hit a small island off Indonesia’s Sulawesi, a report said on Sunday. The floods hit Tahuna, district capital of the Sangihe islands, about 250km north of the North Sulawesi provincial capital, Manado, on Friday.

A second wave of flooding in Malaysia’s south has forced more than 90 000 people to flee their homes and caused two deaths from water-borne disease, officials and reports said on Sunday. The number of people evacuated in Johor state, which borders Singapore, has soared to 92 511, a state news agency said.

The rights group Human Rights Watch says Johnson-Sirleaf is slowly but steadily restoring hope to the nation of 3,5-million people.
