Venezuela President Hugo Chávez promised on Saturday to tackle poor garbage collection and high crime in a bid to win back support for his socialist ”revolution”, which was hurt in a poll defeat a few weeks ago. An indictment served on African National Congress president Jacob Zuma was a continued violation of his human rights, the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) said on Saturday. The timing of the indictment had the ”hallmarks of vengeance, deep-seated anger and frustration by the National Prosecuting Authority and whoever else is behind this”.

Zimbabweans formed queues at banks on Saturday to beat a December 31 deadline to hand in a currency series phased out by the central bank. Reserve Bank chief Gideon Gono declared that the Z$200 000 note would become worthless as he introduced three new banknotes in a bid to tackle a shortage of the local currency in the country.

Ethiopia’s Ogaden rebels on Saturday denied claims they had suffered heavy losses at the hands of the government forces. On Friday, the Ethiopian army said it had ”annihilated the remnants of the Ogaden National Liberation Front that were engaged in disrupting the peace and stability of the Somali region”.
