Last week, the government threatened to disband the Media Council of Kenya after the group announced that it would survey media conduct in the East African nation, including over the December 27 elections that have sparked widespread violence. Major institutional investors plan to urge the sovereign wealth funds that have propped up the world’s banking system to be transparent in their activities and conscientious shareholders. The international investment community is planning to meet some of the leading sovereign wealth funds next month to discuss their investment strategies.

The African National Congress (ANC) is not conducting a forensic audit into empowerment deals and tenders that were received by its investment company, Chancellor House, the party said on Monday. ”The ANC wishes to place on record that it is neither conducting an investigation nor a forensic audit into the company or any of its transactions.”

No life could be ”sacrificed” in the name of profits, mining magnate and businessman Patrice Motsepe told protesting workers at a ferromanganese smelter near Durban on Monday. He was speaking to workers who on Monday staged a protest at the Assmang smelter following Sunday’s blast, which claimed the lives of five people.

Potential job losses due to the energy crisis are not cast in stone, Gold Fields CEO Ian Cockerill said in a conference call on Monday. Earlier, the mining company announced that 6 900 jobs were at risk because of Eskom’s power rationing. ”We’re working closely with the unions to calculate potential losses. There is nothing cast in stone,” Cockerill said.

Police dogs in the German city of Düsseldorf are being fitted out with blue rubber shoes to protect their paws while walking the beat. ”The dogs aren’t too keen yet, but with a few weeks’ training they should be used to them,” Andre Hartwich, a spokesperson for police in the western city, said on Monday.

At least four people were killed in Cameroon’s economic capital, Douala, on Monday when protesters angry over the high cost of living barricaded streets in the port city, looted shops and clashed with riot police. The violence in the teeming city erupted after taxi drivers launched a strike to protest against petrol- and fuel-price hikes.

Springbok and Stormers flank Schalk Burger was found guilty of an ”act contrary to good sportsmanship” by a judicial committee in Cape Town on Monday after gesticulating to referee’s assistant Willie Roos in Saturday’s Super 14 match against the Sharks in Durban. Talks to end Kenya’s political crisis reached a standstill on Monday and negotiators from both sides said President Mwai Kibaki and rival Raila Odinga must now make the hard decisions on sharing power themselves. Negotiating teams met early on Monday to try to finalise agreement on ending post-election turmoil.
