Springbok and Stormers flank Schalk Burger was found guilty of an ”act contrary to good sportsmanship” by a judicial committee in Cape Town on Monday after gesticulating to referee’s assistant Willie Roos in Saturday’s Super 14 match against the Sharks in Durban. Sentence has been deferred to Tuesday.

Burger appeared before the committee on Monday after being cited by citing commissioner Corrie Strydom for gesticulating to Roos when he walked off the field after being yellow-carded in the match.

Burger formed his hands into what looked like mock glasses, inferring that Roos’s eyesight was deficient.

Burger was charged and found guilty of transgressing law 10.4 (k) when walked off he field after seven minutes of the second half of the match.

The yellow card was issued by referee Kelvin Deaker, who had consulted Roos on Burger’s actions in joining a fight between other players. The yellow card was not a decision taken by Roos, but by the referee himself.

Stormers prop Brian Mujati later came close to repeating the act when he was unhappy about something that had happened at a ruck, but was not as blatantly mocking as his teammate. — Sapa
