Rebels advance on Chadian capital

Fighting broke out between Chadian rebels and government forces just north of the capital on Saturday, both sides said, as France prepared to evacuate its nationals in the face of the rebel advance. ”Fighting between government forces and rebels has started at about 20km north of Ndjamena,” a military source said.

Winter storms bring chaos to US, UK

Winter storms at both ends of the United States dumped snow and snarled air and land travel, killing at least 10 people, blocking major highways and even stranding 400 train passengers in the mountains of the Pacific Northwest. Meanwhile, thousands of homes in Britain were still without electricity after heavy snowfall and gale-force winds.

The second meeting of the Yellow Pages Ultimate Athletics series, held at the PUK McArthur Stadium in Potchefstroom, was an evening of mixed fortunes. The weather played a huge part as a fierce wind and dust storm caused several events to be cancelled while others were interrupted and completed later in the evening.

Blind golfer hits hole-in-one

Hitting a hole-in-one is hard enough. Now consider that Leo Fiyalko is 92 years old and blind. ”I was just trying to put the ball on the green,” he said. Fiyalko, who has macular degeneration and has been golfing for 60 years, scored the ace with a five-iron on the 110-yard fifth hole at Cove Cay Country Club on January 10.

Kanoute wins top African soccer award

Mali and Sevilla forward Frederic Kanoute was named Africa Player of 2007 on Friday, beating Chelsea clubmates Michael Essien and Didier Drogba to become the first European-born player to earn the honour. Nigeria’s Cynthia Uwak was chosen as the best women’s player ahead of South Africa’s Modise Portia.
