Drug traffickers shift to semi-submersibles

Drug traffickers have shifted to semi-submersible craft and other smaller, harder-to-detect boats to elude surveillance, causing a sharp drop in cocaine seizures last year, United States officials said on Monday. Admiral Michael Mullen, the chairperson of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said the message was ”loud and clear”.

Serena Williams thinks her sister Venus got a bum rap when a television station played slow motion clips as a male commentator admired her bottom on air. Switchboards around the nation lit up with complaints following the incident on Tuesday during Venus’s match against China’s Yan Zi, according to local television reports.

Sri Lanka bus blast kills 24 as truce scrapped

A roadside bomb tore through a Sri Lankan bus killing 24 people and wounding dozens on Wednesday, officials said, as a six-year ceasefire formally expires between the government and Tamil Tiger rebels. The Ministry of Defence said a large number of schoolchildren were on the bus at the time of the blast in the central district of Moneragala.

Advancing Mauresmo still short of confidence

Former world number one Amelie Mauresmo stumbled into the Australian Open third round on Wednesday, admitting she still lacks the confidence that took her to the top of the rankings. The 2006 Melbourne Park champion led 5-1 in the second set but she allowed Russian Yaroslava Shvedova back into the match before sealing a 6-4 7-6 victory.

Durban mother gunned down for R70

A 12-year-old Durban boy who was getting ready to for his first day back at school watched helplessly on Wednesday morning as his mother was shot five times by a robber. The boy, his seven-year-old sibling, his grandmother and a domestic worker were inside their Pinetown home at the time of the shooting.

Spider-Man fans are outraged that Marvel Comics has turned back the clock and dissolved the marriage of its wall-clinging superhero. While followers of the movie version know the character is single with a sweetheart, as far as comic-book fans are concerned Spider-Man has been married to Mary Jane Watson for the past 21 years.
