A 12-year-old Durban boy who was getting ready to for his first day back at school watched helplessly on Wednesday morning as his mother was shot five times by a robber.
The boy, his seven-year-old sibling, his grandmother and a domestic worker were inside their Pinetown home at the time of the shooting.
When police later arrived at the scene, the schoolboy’s brand new ironed uniform was still laid out on his bed. He was about to put his clothes on, when he heard the gunshots.
Police spokesperson Inspector Solomon Mbele said the incident took place at 6am.
The boy’s mother, Futhi Ncwane (38) was shot at least five times after an intruder broke into her home. The robber stole R70 before fleeing the scene.
”A man, carrying a firearm, entered the premises and confronted the domestic worker in the yard, where she was putting washed clothes on a line to dry,” said Mbele.
The gunmen then forced the domestic worker into the home and demanded to speak to the homeowner, said Mbele.
When Ncwane heard noises, she came out of her bedroom and saw the gunman. A struggle ensued between Ncwane and the intruder and several shots were fired.
”Ncwane sustained five wounds to her head and upper parts of her body. She died at the scene,” said Mbele.
”He did not take any other belongings, not even a cellphone,” Mbele said.
No arrests have been made and police have opened a case of murder and armed robbery. – Sapa
