Durban art pick: November 18 2011

Young Grahamstown artist Sandile Goje mounts his first solo exhibition in Durban this week.

His idosyncratic use of linocuts creates compelling statements in terms of both his candid subject matter and its execution in stark black and white. Strongly influenced by South African artists Eric Mbatha and Joel Sibisi and Swedish printmakers Malin Selman and Kristina Anshelm, in 1994 Goje received a bursary to study at the Grafik Skolan in Stockholm, after which he returned to Grahamstown to teach printmaking at the Dakawa art and craft community centre. Goje’s work is represented in the permanent collections of the World Bank, the MTN Art Institute, Johannesburg Art Gallery, the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

African Art Centre, 94 Florida Road, until December 15. Tel: 031 303 4634. Website: www.afriart.org.za.
