According to the curators at Pretoria’s Association of Arts, Leon Fourie and Ruhan Janse van Vuuren’s exhibition of Nudes and other Domestic Disturbances comes “at the right time of the year, when everybody has the urge to get rid of [his or her] clothes and people become emotionally more exposed”.
The works of these two figurative artists explore interiority and deeply personal aspects of human experience through technically astute “stylised elegance” (to quote the press material). “The artists’ representations of the nude have a touch of reality which invites viewers to become voyeurs and, from their own comfort zones, to contemplate matters of corporeality and mortality.”
Association of Arts Pretoria, 173 Mackie Street, Nieuw Muckleneuk, from November 25 to December 14. The exhibition will be opened by Johan Myburg, the arts editor of Beeld newspaper on November 25 at 6.30pm. Leon Fourie will conduct a walkabout in the gallery on December 3 at 11am.
? The most interesting midweek gig has to be the opening of the Ithuba Arts Fund’s first exhibition at the Intermission Gallery in one of Johannesburg’s most hectic areas.
The Ithuba Arts Fund seeks to provide a platform for emerging artists. As a collaborative initiative by property developers Jika and Citiq, the fund is committed to developing and supporting local creative practices. At the beginning of June Ithuba sent out a call to artists to respond to the city of Johannesburg. Five projects were selected for funding. The work will be on show at the gallery from Wednesday. The artists are Thenjiwe Nkosi, Benon Lutaaya, Dirk Bahmann, Theresa Collins, Mocke Jansen Van Vuuren and Louise Ross. The afterparty, at Private Practice, one floor up in the Lister Building, will feature Felix Laband live.
Intermission Gallery, 18th Floor, Lister Medical Building, 195 Jeppe Street, Johannesburg, on November 30 from 6.30pm to 10pm.
