Durban music picks: June 24 2011

Durban offers folk, electronica, and everything inbetween this week.

■ Rise turn in a rare live performance of their strikingly unique blend of intricate electronica and pulsating dance, rock and soul. Combining the soaring vocals of Keri Hilson with the guitar wizardry of Colin Peddie and the digital skills of Durban über-DJ Martin McHale, Rise creates a sound that may be described as Garbage-meets-Faithless-meets-My Ruin-meets-Leftfield.

Mojos, Riverside Hotel, Durban North. Friday June 24 from 8pm. Entrance is free but book for a table. Tel: 031 563 0600. Visit www.riseband.co.za

■ Internationally renowned guitarist, singer and songwriter Nibs van der Spuy has been touring the world with his brand of insightful acoustic guitar mastery and poignant lyrics over the past four years. He is now on a tour of his home province of KwaZulu-Natal, and it culminates in formidable form this weekend when Van der Spuy teams up with fellow guitar virtuoso Guy Buttery for a momentous musical masterclass. The improvised jams of Buttery and Van der Spuy are legendary as each musician continually ups the ante, with spectacular results.

Alliance Francaise, 22 Sutton Crescent, Durban. Friday June 24 at 7.30pm. Tickets are R100. Tel: 031 312 9582.
