Minister sets deadline for matric results

Education minister Naledi Pandor has given her assurance that all outstanding National Senior Certificate results will be made available by the January 31.

Nearly 60 000 learners were left high and dry when the results were announced in December last year, and education department officials have been working around the clock to sort out the error.

“There are still 33 448 learners still without their results, and this is largely because these learners did not write exams for which they were registered,” said Pandor.

“There are also about 700 cases of irregularities under investigation, but I am confident that these cases will be resolved by January 31.

“I have appointed the national irregularities committee and Umalusi (the qualifications standards authority) to investigate in this regard.”

Addressing the media on Monday, Pandor also made it clear that her department was happy with the overall improvement in mathematics by last year’s grade 12 learners, although she did note the criticisms of the standards of the exams.

“I’ve noted that there has been some criticism of the standard of last year’s maths exams, and the director-general has been tasked with investigating these concerns,” she said.

“I must however add that the department’s strategy to exchange and involve senior teachers has led to a marked improvement in the maths and science results at schools that were involved.”
