Teacher is tops

The Teacher, a sister publication of the Mail & Guardian, was this week recognised for its coverage of women in education. The monthly newspaper, which goes out free to all schools in the country, scooped one of three prizes in the Forum for African Women Educationalists (Fawe) Media Excellence awards.

The judges praised The Teacher for being ”accessible, both in terms of distribution and in the engaging content of the articles”. Another quality that made the paper stand out is its ”comprehensive approach to topics in the education sphere … including issues affecting girls and women at all levels”.

Philippa Garson, editor of The Teacher, said: ”It’s wonderful to be recognised for our contribution to education. The fact that most teachers are women makes our coverage pertinent to them. However, this award also inspires us to take a closer look at specific issues facing women in education, such as the increase of sexual harassment and rape in schools.”
