The dispute between Harmony and the National Union of Metalworkers (NUM) over the closure of shafts and the retrenchment of 9 000 workers has been resolved, the union said on Sunday.
The two parties have signed an agreement preventing the closure of shafts and the retrenchment of workers.
”We are in the process of creating history with this agreement. The fact that we ensured that the shafts are not closed augurs well for our goal to save jobs. What’s more important is the agreement on the new vehicle that will integrate marginal and profitable shafts, because that will also create new opportunities,” said NUM
general secretary Gwede Mantashe.
The two parties would meet in the first week of August to discuss the feasibility of the new agreement. – Sapa
