The mettle for a medal

SWIMMER Penny Heyns has shown the way for the South African team with two gold medals for the 100m and 200m butterfly evets.

Marianne Kriel also finished among the medals with a bronze in the 100m backstroke.

Now it’s the turn of the athletes and none has a better chance than 800m sensation Hezekial Sepeng.

With a stunning performance in a warm-up race prior to the Olympics he has a great chance of making it to the final, and then anything is possible.

The South African hockey team made a good start with a draw against tournament favourites Australia, then did less well to draw 2-2 with Malaysia in a hard- fought match.

Elana Meyer will have to be at her best in the women’s marathon on Sunday when she attempts to beat the Atlanta heat and a strong field.

Marcos Ondruska was the surprise of the first round of tennis when he beat second-seeded Goran Ivanisevic.
