Border riots move to Gauteng

SUTTNER IN SWEDEN RAYMOND SUTTNER, chairman of parliament’s foriegn affairs committee and a vociferious proponent of an “ethical” foreign policy, has been appointed ambassador to Sweden. Sheila Sisulu, director of World Wide Africa Investment Holdings, has been appointed consul general to New York.

ZIM BANS LANDMINES ZIMBABWE announced a ban on the sale and use of anti-personnel landmines in Zimbabwe today (Thursday) just days before a Southern African conference on a landmine free Africa is to being in Johannesburg. Zimbabwe had been under pressure from anti-landmine activisits for its tardy response to the issue.

1 500 STOLEN CARS FOUND

POLICE announced that they have recovered more than 1 500 stolen cars, of which 563 were found in neighbouring states. They have also charged 240 people with helping criminals to steal their cars so that they can claim insurance, a scam known as “hulahoop”.

PAGAD IN GAUTENG

THE Pagad branch in Gauteng, relatively low-profile until now, has announced a series of marches and “other operations” after a “dissatisfying” reponse from Gauteng premier Tokyo Sexwale to demands for an immediate crackdown on crime and street children.

TOBACCO’S OKAY SPORTS minister Steve Tshwete has hit back at the Cancer Association for its criticism of Rothman’s R25 million sponsorship of a high-profile soccer competition. Tshwete said soccer was struggling to find money, and suggested that critics come up with alternative sponsors.
