‘Fire MEC’, says licence scam report

FRIDAY, 1.00PM

THE Moldenhauer commission report into the issue of fraudulent drivers’ licences in Mpumalanga calls on provincial premier Mathews Phosa to fire safety and security MEC Steve Mabona and traffic director Henry Brazer if he hopes to end corruption in law enforcement agencies.

The report also suggests that safety and security department head Stanley Soko, although innocent, should be transferred to a position with fewer responsibilities. The report also proposes the establishment of a special government investigation team to probe licence fraud and other abuses within the department.

Separate criminal investigations into the roles of Mabona and Brazer in the irregular issuing of two licences to deputy parliamentary speaker Baleka Mbete-Kgositsile are continuing.

Phosa announced Friday that he will publicly release the report on Saturday, when he will announce the steps his government intends taking in terms of the report’s recommendations.
