Reserve Bank to aid in Congo currency crisis

SENIOR Reserve Bank and finance department officials will bve dispatched to the Democratic Republic of the Congo this week to help new President Laurent Kabila rebuild his country’s bankrupt economy.

Deputy-President Thabo Mbeki announced the mission, saying it followed a request by Kabila’s alliance. Mbeki said Kabila’s government has to restore a stable and credible currency.: “The currency in the country was not acceptable by the people, so you need to prinf new banknotes.”

MALAYSIANS STILL IN SUN AIR RUNNING MALAYSIA Airlines is still in the bidding for a 100% stake in parastatal Sun Air, the local airline said at the weekend. The Malaysian airline was still looking for black partners at last week’s deadline for non-binding bids. It joins Virgin Atlantic Bhekilanga consortium, Phoenix Venture Partners, and Comair consortium in the race for the privatised airline.

SAMCOR MD TO TOP MAZDA POST SAMCOR MD Jim Miller has been appointed to the newly created post of executive vice president at Mazda Motor Corporation in Hiroshima, Japan. Miller will take up the number two post to the Mazda president on June 27. Samcor in SA builds Ford, Mazda and Mitsubishi motor vehicles.

GOVERNMENT CREDIT CARD SURVEY FOLLOWING the scandals over misuse of corporate credit cards in Transnet and the Independent Broadcasting Authority, the state expenditure department is likely to survey the use of credit cards in all government departments. Parliament’s public accounts committee last week considered a blanket ban on corporate credit cards in government and parastatals.
