Blue Bulls give Lions first taste of defeat

MONDAY, 11.00AM:

THE British Lions suffered their first tour defeat on Sunday when Northern Transvaal beat them 35-30 at Loftus Versfeld stadium in Pretoria.

The Blue Bulls, made up of young players, didn’t have to work very hard for their victory, as the Lions defence was weak in the first half. Lions coach Ian McGeecham said: “We were too slack. We gave away the ball too early instead of retaining it and allowed Northern Transvaal to get possession they really didn’t work for.”

The Lions will be facing the Springbok side in their first Test on June 21 at Newlands in Cape Town.

Blue Bulls: tries by Danie van Schalkwyk (2), Adriaan Richter, Casper Steyn. Three penalties and three conversions by Steyn.

Lions: tries by Jeremy Guscott (2), Gregor Townsend. Three conversions and three penalties by Tim Stimpson.
