TUESDAY, 11.00AM:
THE British Lions rugby team has lost yet another player to injury; Scott Quinnell flew home on Monday with a strained groin muscle.
Quinnell is the third player to leave South Africa within 10 days, close on the heels of lock Doddie Weir and flyhalf Paul Grayson. Grayson has a hip injury and Weir was the victim of a controversial raking by Mpumalanga lock Marius Bosman.
Lions manager Fran Cotton said Quinnell has not yet been replaced. Other players who seem unlikely to last the rest of the tour due to injury are Rob Wainwright, who was also raked by a Mpumalanga player; Allan Bateman, who has pulled a hamstring muscle; and Jeremy Davidson, who twisted his knee.
MPUMALANGA rugby players Marius Bosman and Elandre van der Bergh were disciplined by a tribunal on Monday night for their violence on the field during a match against the British Lions last Wednesday. Bosman was fined R10 000 for raking Lion Doddie Weir and ending the Brit’s tour. Van der Bergh was fined R5 000, of which R3 000 was suspended.*
