THE South African men’s hockey team beat Italy 2-1 in their second international in Rome on Tuesday, overtaking Italy’s 1-0 half-time lead.
Greg Nicol and Mike Cullen scored one goal each in the 43rd and 49th minutes respectively. The win was a boost to the team’s confidence after their 3-3 draw with Italy on Monday.
Meanwhile, the SA women’s hockey team to face the Australian under-24 side next month has been named. The same team will also play in the World Cup pre-qualifying tournament in Harare in August.

DIPROSE REPLACES QUINELL ENGLISH rugby club Saracens’ captain, Tony Diprose, will replace injured British Lion Scott Quinnell for the rest of the British tour of South Africa. Diprose cancelled a holiday on a Caribbean Island with his girlfriend at the last minute, and will arrive in Durban tomorrow.
FOULMOUTH RETURNS AS A WARRIOR TEMPERAMENTAL under-20 soccer player Junaid Hartley will rejoin the SA U-20 side, the United Warriors, in the World Youth championship in Malaysia on Thursday. Hartley’s parents apologised to coach Shakes Mashaba for their son’s bad behaviour in recent matches — Hartley has often lost his temper and verbally abused his opponents and teammates. Mashaba allowed Hartley back onto the side on condition, “that he should now play by the rules”.
WOMEN LOSE TO BRITS SOUTH AFRICA lost the two-day women’s golf Test against England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland this week, with four-and-a half, to their seven-and-a-half. Sanet Marais scored a personal victory when she beat British champion Karen Rostron twice, both times by one hole.
MOHANYETSI IN MOSCOW HENDRICK MOHANYETSI finished the 800m sprint in a personal best of one minute and 44,62 seconds at the Moscow Grand Prix last weekend. Mohanyetsi has qualified to run in the World Athletics Championships in Athens this August.
PROTEAS BLOOM IN OZ THE South African women’s netball team, the Proteas, beat the Western Australian Institute of Sport 62-48 in Perth yesterday. The Proteas will face the Australian national side in the final of their three-match Test series on Wednesday.
