Ernie leads first round of Buick Classic

FRIDAY, 11.00AM:

THE Buick Classic golf tournament began on Thursday, and defending champion Ernie Els streaked into the lead with a seven under par first round score of 64.

Els, who won the US Open on Monday, said after the round: “It’s right there, it’s still in my mind. I still get the nice feel from the US Open. It’s only been four days ago. It’s actually been a very quick four days. It’s gone by, but it feels like it happened yesterday. I don’t want to lose that feeling, not soon, anyway.” He added that he is not going to hold anything back in this tournament.

Brad Faxon is close behind, after carding 66, and Paul Azinger, Jeff Maggert, Vijay Singh and Jim Furyk are leading the rest of the pack with 67.

American sensation Tiger Woods had a bad round, carding a one over 72.

Nick Price is missing the tournament to attend the funeral of his caddie, Jeff “Squeeky” Medlen, who died this week of leukemia.
