ANGOLA TRUCE THE United Nations has persuaded the Angolan government to halt its offensive against Unita in the diamond-rich northern part of the country. The UN said it has not called on the government troops to withdraw from the area.
KENYA OPPONENT BARRED KENYAN opposition activist Sheikh Khalid Balala arrived at the weekend in Nairobi on a SwissAir flight — but was prevented from getting off the plane. The plane then flew him to neighbouring Tanzania. The Shiekh, who has been stranded in Germany for three years after Kenya withdrew his passport, accused British authorities of colluding with the Kenyans in preventing him from returning to the country.
NO RULING ON MABONA THE ANC has postponed a decision on former Mpumalanga Safety and Security MEC Steve Mabona, who resigned in disgrace over the fake licences scandal. Mabona is still a salaried member of the Mpumalanga legislature, representing the ANC.
CELLPHONE FINES ALL provinces have given their approval to new road safety legislation which imposes fines of up to R20 000 on people using hand-held cellphones while driving. The AA has been prominent in lobbying for the ban, and has been backed by both the major cellular networks.
