African Nations Cup upsets

AFRICAN soccer at the weekend offered a string of African Nations Cup surprises, including wins by underdogs Namibia, Angola and Malawi, and Cameroon’s draw with Gabon.

Namibia beat soccer-giants Kenya 1-0 in their Group Five African Nations cup qualifier match in Nairobi on Saturday. Namibia, who beat Liberia 2-1 in a World Cup qualifier in Monrovia two weeks ago, are now leading their qualifying group.

Group 1: Angola-Ghana 1-0

Group 2: Mali-Benin 3-1; Cote d’Ivoire-Algeria 2-1

Group 3: Senegal-Ethiopia 3-0; Morocco-Egypt 1-0

Group 5: Cameroon-Gabon 2-2; Kenya-Nambia 0-1

Group 6: Tanzania-Togo 1-0; Liberia-Congo DR 2-1

Group 7: Mozambique-Zambia 2-2; Malawi-Mauritius 3-2

SPORT BRIEFS

WATER POLO BOOST THE South African men’s water polo team received a R50 000 sponsorship from snack food company Willards on Monday. The team will use the funds to participate in an international tournament in Poland next month.

WILD CARDS SURFERS Paul Canning, Greg Emslie and Heather Clarke were granted wild-card exemptions for the Gunston 500 surfing competion, to be held in Durban from July 15.

JUNIOR GOLF SOUTH AFRICA finished ninth in the world junior golf championships in Tottori, Japan, on Monday with 898 points. The top three teams were United States (864 points), Japan (880 points), and England (885) points.

WIMBLEDON DOUBLES SOUTH AFRICAN tennis player John-Laffnie de Jager has been drawn as the mixed doubles partner of world top-seed Martina Hingis of Switzerland, for the Wimbledon doubles championships which began this week. Meanwhile, Robbie Koening of Durban qualified for the main Wimbledon doubles draw on Monday, with his American partner Andrew Rueb. Rueb and Koening beat Dick Norman and Kenny Thorne 6-1 4-6 6-3.

CHIRWALI FOR FRANCE SUPERSPORT United’s international Ernest Chirwali has signed a three year contract with French club Toulouse. He left for France last Saturday.
