MONDAY, 10.00AM:
ALL the South African singles players in the Wimbledon tournament were eliminated on Sunday. South Africa’s great hope, sixth-seed Amanda Coetzer, scored the biggest loss, beaten in straight sets by Pat Hy-Boulais of Canada.
Wayne Ferreira also suffered a dismal defeat to Cedric Pioline of France, 6-4, 6-3, 6-3. Ferreira said his defeat was not due to his recent ankle injury: ”It was a bit sore, but it is definitely no excuse.”
In other matches, Neville Godwin put up a fight against American Alex O’Brien, but lost 6-3, 6-3, 6-7 (6-8), 7-6 (7-5). Marcos Ondruska, currently world No. 125, lost to Todd Woodbridge of Australia, 7-5, 6-1, 7-6.
Coetzer’s 6-2, 6-1 loss deflated her after her excellent recent performances in the French Open and in Berlin: ”I have been feeling so good, so confident. But I guess I have not had enough play on grass and I knew this sort of thing could happen.”
