WEDNESDAY, 10.45AM:
NEWLY elected Athletics South Africa (ASA) president Leonard Cheune is angry at a new web site and e-mail messages sent to certain media from the recently launched Rescue Athletics South Africa (Rasa) on Monday night. The message claimed that the weekend ASA presidential elections at Esselen Park were rigged.
“The Internet website can be read worldwide and they obviously want ASA to be seen in a bad light. If they have money to spend, I would encourage them to use it on something more constructive, like the ASA development programme,” said a fuming Cheune.
National Sports Council president Mluleki George also condemned the establishment of Rasa. He said that the NSC should not recognise rebel sporting bodies. “We had this sort of problem a few weeks ago in rugby and I stand by my statement that rebel sporting bodies are not the answer to solving problems,” he said.
