Govt gives R200 000 to Cape flood victims

FREEDOM OF CAPE TOWN PRESIDENT Nelson Mandela is to be given the Freedom of Cape Town later this year, Nomaindia Mfeketo, chairman of the Cape Town city council said on Wednesday. She said it will be awarded to “a longstanding member of the city, the greatest leader of the century and our well-loved president”.

NO EXTRADITION THE Danish ambassador to South Africa, Alf Johnson, said his government has not applied for the extradition of arms dealer Anders Jensen. Johnson said the Danish government had, on several previous occasions, unsuccessfully applied to the previous South African government for Jensen’s extradition. The requests had been rejected because no extradition agreement exists between the two countries.

EUTHANASIA VIEWS DIFFER THE Association of Law Societies on Tuesday said it is unable to put forward a view on euthanasia to the Law Commission which would represent the views of all its members. The ALS said euthanasia is a personal issue and that attorneys have differnet views on the subject. The society recommended its members study the Law Commission’s discussion paper on the topic and make their own submissions.

14 MATIES FREED FOURTEEN University of Stellenbosch students detained on Sunday by Zambian police as suspected spies were released on Tuesday. The 14 were arrested at Lusaka airport when they went to meet two colleagues who were flying in. The 10 men and four women were doing missionary work for the Dutch Reformed Church.
