SWAPO GUERRILLAS GO HOME THE 2 000 former Swapo guerrillas who staged a ”camp in” in central Windhoek for almost a fortnight have agreed to go home. They have received assurances from the government that special efforts will be made to find them jobs. The former guerrillas protested that they had laid down their lives for the country, but had been unemployed for seven years since liberation.
‘JUSTIFY YOUR JOBS’ THE 650 SA Broadcasting Corporation staffers facing retrenchment have been given until Monday to motivate why the broadcaster should continue to employ them. Thosed in line for retrenchment will be given priority in filling 150 vacant positions. Recently, more than 750 SABC employees left after accepting voluntary severance packages.
MPL SURVIVES SHOOTING GAUTENG MPL Oupa Monareng survived two attempts on his life at the weekend. Monareng, who serves on the provincial safety and security committee was shot twice on Sunday while leaving a house in Soweto. He tried to drive himself to hospital but came under fire again, before crashing his car into a house, whose occupants called an ambulance for him. Monareng was in 1994 convicted of attempting to bribe a police officer after being caught driving a stolen car.
50 KINSHASA MURDERS FIFTY people were murdered in Kinshasa over the weekend, according to witnesses. The victims appear to have been mainly civilians, shot by former Mobutu soldiers who now use their weapons to commit crimes. The government has given all former soldiers an ultimatum to hand over their weapons within the next fortnight.
