Health dept awards R7m Aids awareness tender

MONDAY, 5.00PM

THE Department of Health has awarded a R7-million contract to a consortium of non-governmental organisations for the “Beyond Awareness” media campaign on Aids.

The consortium, led by the Society for Family Health, includes the Community Agency for Social Enquiry (Case), Dramaide, Soul City, Ulwazi Educational Radio and Siyakha Communications.

The consortium was selected by an adjudication panel of Aids and media experts nominated by the National HIV/Aids/STD communication forum.

Forum spokeswoman Rentia Angenbag said the “Beyond Awareness” concept was designed to provide support to individuals and communities who want to take action concerning Aids. “In the light of the current HIV infection level of more than 1 000 per day, the challenge of the Beyond Awareness campaign is to use creative strategies to stimulate deeper commitment and action,” she said.

Society for Family Health director Mitchell Warren said the consortium provides a unique opportunity for a partnership between government and non-governmetal organisations to tackle the disease.
