Carolus wants TRC to force names from intelligence man

WEDNESDAY, 3.00PM

AFRICAN National Congress acting secretary general Cheryl Carolus said on Wednesday that her party expects the Truth and Reconciliation Commission to use its powers to force National Intelligence Service head Niel Barnard to reveal the names of the apartheid intelligence agency’s informers.

“We call on the TRC to insist that he reveals those names,” Carolus said at an ANC media briefing in Johannesburg. “We believe his resistance to releasing those names implies a continuation of those structures. What vested interest does Mr Barnard have in the continuation of those structures?” Carolus asked. “Mr Barnard must reveal those names. We expect the TRC to use whatever powers the Act [Promotion of National Unity and Reconciliation Act of 1995] gives them to insist he reveal those names,” she said. “Those security structures are inimical to democracy,”

Barnard told the TRC on Tuesday that several people occupying prominent leadership positions in SA supplied information to the NIS during the 1980s.
