FRIDAY, 1.30PM:
OLYMPIC silver medallist Hezekiel Sepeng won the 800m event at an international meeting at Rheede in Germany on Wednesday and showed he is recovering from the hamstring injury that threatened his participation in the World Championships in Athens next month.
Wednesday’s race was a fitness test for Sepeng, who recently underwent intensive physiotherapy and muscle exercise in South Africa. He clocked in at 1min 45,32sec, just under Athletics South Africa’s qualifying time for the World Championships in Athens, which is 1min 45,50sec.
“He displayed a magnificent kick. He had a really good race,” said his coach JP van der Merwe.
