Cosatu set on mass action over employment Bill

TUESDAY, 5.30PM

THE Congress of SA Trade Unions appears set to implement its proposed campaign of rolling mass action from Monday next week following Labour Minister Tito Mboweni’s threat to withdraw the Basic Conditions of Employment Bill from Parliament.

Cosatu plans to hold a one-hour national work stoppage on Monday, followed by 24-hour strikes in the various provinces to press demands concerning the Basic Conditions of Employment Bill, after discussion on the Bill between business, government and labour in the National Economic Development and Labour Council deadlocked. In the latest development, the SA Municipal Workers’ Union on Tuesday threw its full weight behind the 1,4-million-member trade union federation’s campaign.

Cosatu’s executive committee met in Johannesburg on Tuesday following the African National Congress’s statement on Monday that it will meet the labour federation’s leadership in about two weeks to discuss the controversial Bill.
