TUESDAY, 1.30PM:
THE National Olympic Committe of South Africa (Nocsa) has refused to be gorvened by the National Sports Council’s (NSC) resolution on affirmative action. In a NSC meeting on Saturday it was agreed to introduce affirmative action quotas in club sport as a matter of urgency.
Nocsa general manager Dan Moyo said: “We are not affiliates of the NSC, we are affiliates of the International Olympic Committee. This resolution has absolutely nothing to do with us and therefore we have no position on the resolution.”
Moyo said even if NSC became a statutory body it could not interfere with or force policies on Nocsa: “Nocsa is an autonomous body which subscribes to the Olympic charter only.” He said Olympic committees are not regulated by government laws, and Nocsa has a relationsip with the government through recognotion.
He said Nocsa’s two-tie system recognises the need to redress previous wrongs in the upliftment of athletes, and the need to select the best athletes to represent the country.
