OLYMPICS SUPPORT
THE American-based Corporate Council on Africa, devoted to promoting US trade with Africa has come out in support of the Cape Town Olympics bid. Kase Lawal, a director of the council and CEO of a Texas energy company, made the announcement on Wednesday at a Washngton luncheon given in honour of a South African government delegation.
SNATCHED BABY
A WOMAN visited Kimberley Hospital maternity ward on Tuesday evening, chatted to the mother of a new-born baby — then kidnapped the baby when the mother fell asleep. Police have announced a massive search.

POLICE have found the snatched baby after a 12 hour search, and charged an unnamed young woman with kidnap.
RENAMO RADIOS SEIZED
MOZAMBIQUE police have seized military radios in the southern district of Matutuine, a Renamo stronghold, as part of a policy to collect all hardware of war. Renamo insists that its agreement with the Frelimo government gave it the right to hold on to its radios.
HEROIN ARREST
A SOUTH AFRICAN woman identified as Sandra Higham has been arrested in Pakistan and charged with carrying heroin in her luggage. She was booked on a Karachi plane to Nairobi, when customs officials said they found 2kg of heroin in two leather bags. A South African foreign affairs spokesman said some 200 South Africans have been jailed abroad for drug offences, most of them used as messengers by drug syndicates in exchange for free holidays.
MURDERER ESCAPES
CONVICTED murderer and robber Petrus Niewenhuis escaped from Leeukop Prison north of Johannesburg on Wednesday, still wearing his prison clothes, after telling warders that he was off to meet a social worker.
